Day of the Holy Spirit

On Monday, June 24, the Day of the Holy Spirit (which is a national holiday in Greece), yiayia and I took the kids to a nearby country chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity, which belongs to our neighboring parish of Katohori.

Here's Fr. Ioannis.

Until perhaps 30 or 40 years ago, the country chapel was the site of a large feast on this day. People from Portaria would walk out to the chapel in the evening for Vespers and Artoklasia, and then spend the night camping out around the church. In the morning, they would attend Liturgy, and then spend the rest of the day feasting with family and the community, playing traditional music, dances, etc. Unfortunately, since the advent of the television, all of this has been replaced. Still, some remnants remain which point to a more festive past -- specifically, some refreshments and conversation outside the church after the end of the service. Above, we sat in the shade talking with people.

On the way home, we stopped at the Monastery of Panagia Odigitria in Portaria. Here are a couple of photos of yiayia with the triplets under a nice shaded patio area.
